Jenel's Critique of "Still the Same" by Nicki

This poem is about waiting in a public place for someone who does not show. This piece has a rhythm—the way the writer starts the poem off by “Red. Green. Yellow. Stop, go” sets the cadence and also provides vivid images of the colors in the reader’s mind. What I noticed was that the colors of the lights turning seem to contrast the pallor of the emotional state of the writer’s mood. There is an air of sadness to this poem, of resignation, and determination to stay there and wait for someone, even if it is a lost cause.

I like how the writer is commenting on the activities around her and then it causes her to have thoughts about her own situation. For example, in the lines “Each car taking its turn, Stopping, going, slowing, Do I stop waiting and rejoin the dance?” she is watching the cars, it makes her think of dancing, and then she asks herself what she is going to do in the next moment. This adds to the flow and the rhythm of the piece.

The only line that stuck out to me that could use some revision is the line “The glare of the headlights”—it’s a little cliché. Maybe another description could be used that would be more fresh.
