Alana Roach’s critique on Dennis Johnson’s Blood in My Eyes

This is a powerful and loquacious poem about a man nearly losing his life from a gunshot wound and having his life flash before his eyes. He feels remorseful for the harm he has caused and feels like this was karma due for harming another earlier in his life.
I think that the imagery is vast and the details are complex. I especially love lines 5, 6, and 7.
“Complimented with colors of moon lit blood, a shimmering crimson red pool, professes tenacity in this funky back alley”.
It is very refreshing to have someone shed so much of their past in such rawness on a class paper. That takes a lot of courage.
I think that the quotations were a little obscure, but I understand them for the most part. I just wish the last time as well as the whole incident was not as elusive.
